Our Experience

Headquartered in the Tidewater Virginia region, our firm specializes in residential and commercial design encompassing new projects as well as adaptive reuse, upfit, rehabilitation and automotive dealership design projects.  Stroud Architects can also help in the design of additions to your existing home as well as kitchens, bathrooms, basements, attics, and boat houses.  We have help to develop and work on projects throughout the mid-Atlantic and Southeast regions to include the low-county of South Carolina, coastal Georgia and southeast Florida.

We have a passion for well thought-out and "client-centric" architectural design and its efficient implementation through accountable and ethical construction management.  Regardless of your architectural aesthetic, our firm has the experience to capture your dream and guide it efficiently through the construction process.   We believe that the architectural design process is a creative and collaborative effort between the architect and client.  When done successfully, the process can be a rewarding journey, rather than the loathsome chore it is often made out to be. Over the last 25 years we have had the good fortune to have collaborated with many talented design professionals and builders on some of the nation’s most prominent and significant historic structures.

We provide a full range of historic preservation and historic building consulting services from our office located in the Tidewater region of Virginia as well.  A significant part of our firm's preservation work involves providing preservation/restoration/adaptive reuse construction documents and historic building construction management.  In doing so, we  provide scopes of work to include up-to-date means and methods and specifications as well as preliminary cost estimates for small to large preservation projects.

We also provide research and analysis aimed toward determining whether a property is eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places, as well as assessing potential effects to historical and cultural resources. We provide a wide array of other preservation consulting services that include: Owner's representation, historic structure reports; federal and state rehabilitation tax credits and their management; identifying tax credit investors, Section 106, differed maintenance planning and inspections; and historic mortar and paint analysis.  We also have experience with modern "green" systems integration into historic structures such as geo-thermal systems, etc.   We have work closely with  qualified mechanical engineering firms to coordinate the design of modern systems into historic structures that minimize potential impact to historic fabric.  Achieving this in the end provides the client with a comfortable and efficient environment while maintaining the integrity of the historic structure or new construction.

We also represent our clients in construction and restoration projects in an effort to protect their interest and manage the expectations of all involved.  We understand that new construction as well as the restoration of historic structures can be a daunting and at times confusing process.  We have over fifty years of combined experience in design, construction and preservation management and have learned how best to shepherd projects along as well as manage expectations of all involved, which we feel is very important.   And finally, we understand the need for our clients confidentiality in all matters.

Stroud Architects is licensed to practice in Virginia, North Carolina, and Florida.

We meet the professional qualifications standards outlined by the Secretary of the Interior's Standards (Code of Federal Regulations, 36 CFR Part 61) to practice in the fields of architectural history and historic architecture.

We are also a certified Small, Micro, Woman Owned Business (SWaM) in the Commonwealth of Virginia.  (Certification Number: 818363)

We look forward to discussing your next project with you.
